Lila Community Visit and Uluru

Today we were blessed to visit the Lila community just out of Kings Canyon. Lila is home to 15 indigenous families and has a small school. We are the very first trekset group (and Dominic Group) to visit there!

We were given a tour of three sacred spaces with our indigenous guide Vera and educational guide Leah. We learnt about secret men’s and women’s business and got to see some aboriginal art work. We even got to see a hand print of Vera’s father from when he was just six months old!

The sites were truly spectacular and still used today by the community. We all felt a wonderful sense of peace and belonging and Vera welcomed us to her land with an open heart. Some of us got to try bush tucker on our walk and Vera shared with us so many stories and special customs. We even know a little secret for keeping away the flies now!

We were also given a traditional smoking ceremony to welcome us to country. This was so special and we all felt truly lucky to have been given the opportunity to visit such a wonderful place.

After this we watched Vera draw our day’s journey in the sand and then got to try some traditional dot painting of our own!

We finished off the tour with some roasted kangaroo tail which most agreed tasted a little like lamb!

A couple of days before our visit we used a portion of our grant money to buy toiletries and fresh fruit for the children at Lila. Our gifts will be distributed to the school children tomorrow and will be very welcomed by the community

We then made our way to the rock settling at Yalara just in time to see the sun set over Uluru. We’re winding up our trip with such magnificence that is it hard to write down just how amazing this place really is.
Feeling truly blessed.

  1. What a great day you have just experienced. A wonderful opportunity to visit an aboriginal community and be welcomed with such generosity. Hoping our precious students who have been unwell are feeling much better. Take good care.
